Abstract The WWW is increasingly being used as a tool and platform for survey research. While conducting web surveys researchers encounter challenges in all phases of the research process, ranging from composing sampling frames, questionnaire construction, addressing potential respondents, questionnaire distribution, measures for response rate improvement, to data cleaning and processing. In this paper we will discuss how these challenges were dealt with in a web survey recently conducted among approximately 10,000 respondents in seven European countries (Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, Netherlands, Sweden, and UK). The web survey obtained a response rate of about 21%. The aim of the study was to assess the predictors of academics' organizational commitment and the relation between organizational commitment and quality of academics' performances.
